Starting in the 1970s, scientists working for the oil giant made remarkably accurate projections of just how much burning fossil fuels would warm the planet

Exxon researchers performed extensive research into the science of climate change in the late 1970s, outfitting one of the company’s supertankers with cutting-edge equipment to measure carbon dioxide in the ocean and the air.

Following a recent study published on Thursday in the journal Science, Exxon’s experts made surprisingly precise predictions about how much burning fossil fuels would warm the earth over the coming decades.
